Karen Can't Sing To Him
Written August 1991

A friend of mine named Karen
She cuts hair for a living
But that's not where she wants to be.

She writes beautiful ballads
Wants to sing them to the people
God, she's ten times better than me

But she had a family
A husband and a baby
That's the life she chose to lead

And I respect her judgement
Like I respect her husband
And still she says to me

Chorus:
She says - Gary, I wrote this beautiful love song
I wrote it on a whim
It's from the heart and it bares my soul
But Gary, I can't sing it to him.

Now Karen really loves him
She puts no one above him
He was all she was searching for

But when she sings her love songs
He rarely ever listens
It's like he's heard them all before

But her romance is still there
So from feelings she cannot share
Karen wrote her song

A song of love, a song of hope
Sung to a man she used to know
And loved once, but now is gone.

(Chorus)

Bridge:
Time after time I've sung my love for him
And time after time he's been there
But I guess you reach a point
where it all just sounds the same
And I guess at that point
  you just cease to care.

(Solo)

So we sit in a restaurant
Talking about the things we want
She says she has all she'll ever need

Watching a beautiful boy get old
And a wonderful husband's hand to hold
Life's as precious as it could be

And still I wonder if some day
Things will turn out for me the same
When I find someone to be mine

I'll write a song for my love so dear
And tell her how much I love to hold her near
And all she'll do is sigh...

Chorus:
And I'll say - Karen, I wrote this beautiful love song
I wrote it on a whim
It's from the heart and it bares my soul
But Karen, I can't sing it...
Just like she said Gary, I can't sing it to him.
